Magazine Cover

In this lesson I learned about the different Magazine conventions used in a Magazine cover. This included the Masthead, Cover image, Feature Article, Coverlines, Puffs/Plugs, Boxout's, Strips/Banners, Datelines and barcodes. In class we took very detailed notes on the purpose of each of these conventions and how to use them.

For my magazine cover I chose to create a cover for a travel magazine featuring the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico. My cover highlights one of the most popular tourist locations in Puerto Rico, "El Morro." El Morro is a very big part of Puerto Rican culture. It is an original Spanish fort used by conquistadores in 1533 to defend against pirates and foreign invaders.

I used a variety of different conventions in my cover including an original Masthead, coverlines, a cover image featuring my older brother, a plug/puff, a banner, barcode, and a dateline. These help contribute to the cover by providing details and information to help inform the reader about what the magazine is about and what they are going to be reading. I had a few challenges moving around the software, but nothing I couldn't figure out. The main issue I ran into was putting in the coverlines and changing the colors of both the text and rectangles to make it readable/legible. My next project using InDesign will be much smoother now that I understand how to use the software, and I should run into less problems. Now that I know how to properly use text boxes and shapes it will be much easier to use them in future projects. This will help my portfolio project by helping me edit images and covers to use in my portfolio which will help me get a good grade.
